US Lawmakers press FTC to track tech companies’ commitment to teen privacy
In a letter to the agency, the lawmakers referred to Facebook’s recent move to place Instagram users between the ages of 13 and 16 into private accounts.
Three US Democrat lawmakers have urged the FTC to monitor whether tech companies honour their commitments to privacy for users under 18 years of age. The letter also wants the agency to look at Google’s promise to block ad targeting based on age, gender and interests of under 18 users.
The three lawmakers - Senator Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts) and Representatives Kathy Castor (D-Florida) and Lori Trahan (D-Massachusetts) – have pressed the agency to exercise authorities under the FTC Act to monitor tech companies.
Earlier this year, lawmakers introduced a bill prohibiting websites and apps from collecting personal information from users between 13 and 15 without consent.
